Introducing MOOCs Book #3...
MOOCs Book #1. Back in 2015, Mimi Lee, Tom Reeves, Tom Reynolds, and I edited a book on the MOOCs and open education that was published by Routledge. This book was soon translated to Korean and then Chinese...most recently to Arabic (still looking for a publisher for the Arabic version).

Dr. Paul Byun (on right), an alum of my program at Indiana University, led the Korean translation team.
Dr. Okhwa Lee, who works with Paul at Chungbuk National University went to graduate school with me at the University of Wisconsin a long time ago.
The Chinese translation team from South China Normal University is below. They also translated my book, The World is Open and have a chapter in the new MOOCs book.
The book received a first place book award at the AECT conference in Las Vegas in 2016 (see pic below with our editor from Routledge, Daniel Schwartz). The was quite an honor for Mimi, Tom, Tom, and I. Awards like these happy in fleeting moments in time but are life lasting memories.

Korean, and 2018 in Chinese)
Book Endorsement:
“I am truly astonished by the creative energy that the
MOOC has unleashed in recent years. This book is a wonderful collection of some
of the very best thinking in this very young field.”
Quote from Sebastian
Thrun, CEO and cofounder of Udacity,
Stanford Professor, and developer of Google Glass and self-driving cars, and
instructor to 160,000+ students in a MOOC on AI.
MOOCs Book #2. We simultaneously edited a special issue of the International Journal on E-Learning (IJEL) which was published as a print on demand book by AACE.

Like MOOCs book #1, this special issue and book project on MOOCs and open education spun out of a preconference symposium at the International E-Learn conference in Las Vegas in 2013. We had around 100 people in attendance at the preconference.
MOOCs Book #3. Well guess what? We got another one. This book project was led by my long-time colleague, Dr. Ke Zhang of Wayne State University. Ke along with Tom Reeves, Tom Reynolds, and I edited this one. It was also published by Routledge in November 2019 but is dated 2020.
It was a ton of work. There are 68 contributors from 25 or so countries who describe what is occurring in 47 different countries. There are chapters
from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Brazil, the UAE (includes info on Saudi Arabia,
Jordan, etc.), The Philippines, the Bahamas, Turkey, India, Chile, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Egypt, Kenya, Thailand, South Africa, and even North Korea is
covered.
We were a great team. It has been a shear delight working with Ke Zhang, Tom Reeves, Mimi Lee, and Tom Reynolds on one or more of these three MOOC book projects. They are some of the best friends and colleagues one could have. Still, it may be our last such project. It may be time to MOOC on. Ke, Tom, Tom, and I were legitimately exhausted and a couple is us got ill at the end of the third one. I know that I was dead tired at when we turned it in to the publisher in May....in addition to editing and writing 30 chapters (counting the foreword and the preface), we had to
collect 68 contracts, bios, titles, high resolution pics, addresses, emails, etc. But we were still smiling as we got it done!

Book Blurb:
"With
e-learning technologies evolving and expanding at high rates,
organizations and institutions around the world are integrating massive
open online courses (MOOCs) and other open educational resources (OERs).
MOOCs and Open Education in the Global South explores the
initiatives that are leveraging these flexible systems to educate,
train, and empower populations previously denied access to such
opportunities.
Featuring contributors leading efforts in rapidly changing nations
and regions, this wide-ranging collection grapples with accreditation,
credentialing, quality standards, innovative assessment, learner
motivation and attrition, and numerous other issues. The provocative
narratives curated in this volume demonstrate how MOOCs and OER can be
effectively designed and implemented in vastly different ways in
particular settings, as detailed by experts from Asia, Latin America,
the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific/Oceania, and the Caribbean.
This comprehensive text is an essential resource for policy makers,
instructional designers, practitioners, administrators, and other MOOC
and OER community stakeholders."
The frontmatter includes the foreword from Mimi Lee and the Preface and Chapter 1 from Ke Zhang, Tom Reeves, Tom Reynolds, and myself. I think we had to rewrite the preface about 50 times; I was lead on the preface so I have every draft copy saved on my machine...taking up a lot of file space. Suffice to say, it is fairly long. In effect, we attempt to provide a brief history of the field of MOOCs and open education as well as some of our involvement in it. I'm sure glad that is done.
